Green grassy hillside with shrubs, small trees, and dark rock outcrops under an overcast sky.

Grass, Shrub, Outcrop

A hillside with just enough structure to hold a photograph together on a day when the sky was contributing nothing whatsoever.

Dark rock coming through green, small trees where the slope eases, and a cloud base low enough that the top of the hill was a rumour. This is what most walking days actually look like, as opposed to what landscape photographs usually show.

Grey days are not wasted days

The advice to only go out at dawn and dusk produces a very narrow body of work, and it is a poor description of being outdoors. Overcast light is soft, even and completely reliable, and for anything with texture in it — rock, bark, grass, weathered paint — it is better than golden hour.

What you lose is depth, because without directional light everything flattens. You get it back by finding layers in the land itself, which is what the outcrops are doing here.

Bad light is usually just light you have not found a subject for yet.
