A line of palm trees along a walk way in a compound.

The Palm Line

Somebody planted these in a straight line a long time ago, and unlike most attempts to impose order on plants, the line has held.

Palms are odd trees to photograph. They have no branching structure to speak of, so a single one reads as a lollipop, and you need several before the shapes start relating to each other. A row of them does most of the compositional work for you.

Repetition and the exception

The rule with repeating subjects is that the eye wants one thing that breaks the pattern — the shorter tree, the gap, the one leaning out of line. Here the trees are frustratingly well behaved, so the walkway underneath has to be the break.

It runs diagonally against the rhythm of the trunks, which is enough. If it had run parallel I do not think there would have been a photograph.
