People ask about the kit more than anything else, which I find slightly depressing and completely understandable. So, for the record, here is what goes in the bag, and roughly what each thing has earned its place doing.
| Item | Why it is in the bag | Days used out of 30 |
|---|---|---|
| 35mm | The one that stays on the body most of the time | 28 |
| 50mm | Foregrounds, details, anything I want flattened slightly | 19 |
| Tripod | Dusk, and nothing else | 7 |
| Polariser | Water, wet rock, glass fronts | 6 |
| Spare battery | Cold mornings | 30 |
| Head torch | In theory, every walk down in the dark | 2 |
The head torch number is the honest one and the embarrassing one. I own a perfectly good head torch and it spends most of its life in a drawer, which is why several of these posts end with me coming down a hill in the dark using a phone.
What is not in the bag
No wide-angle zoom, because I stopped using it and did not miss it. No filters beyond the polariser. No second body, which I would carry if I were being paid and do not carry when I am not.
The whole thing weighs under four kilos and that number matters more than any of the individual choices. A bag you will carry up a hill at five in the morning is better than a bag containing the correct equipment.
