Two storeys of dark grey with far more glass than the weather in this part of the world could reasonably justify. The lawn is kept to a standard I could not maintain for a single week.
Dark buildings are a nuisance to expose. The house wants to sit a stop or so under where the meter puts it, and the grass in front of it wants to sit slightly over, and the sky above is brighter than either. Something has to give.
What gives
The sky, usually. A modern house against a blank white sky is a perfectly honest photograph — that is what an overcast day looks like — and it keeps the attention on the building’s edges, which is where the design actually lives.
I metered off the lawn, dropped two thirds of a stop, and let the top of the frame go where it wanted. The alternative is bracketing and blending, which I have done and rarely enjoy looking at afterwards.
