Rugged hillside covered with large gray boulders and rocks, with sparse green shrubs and trees under a bright blue sky with scattered clouds.

Boulder Field

A hillside that looks poured rather than built. The boulders are the size of small cars and sit at angles that suggest they arrived in a hurry, some time ago, and have not been disturbed since.

Green comes through wherever it can, which is not many places. What grows here grows in the gaps, low and tough and mostly grey-green, the kind of plant that has decided flowering is optional.

No horizon

I left the sky out entirely. Once you remove the horizon a slope stops reading as a slope and becomes a surface, and the eye has to work out the orientation from the shadows instead. It makes for an uncomfortable photograph, and I think uncomfortable is correct for this hillside.

It also removes any sense of how far away anything is. The boulder at the top of the frame is perhaps sixty metres further off than the one at the bottom, and nothing in the picture tells you so.
